Altadena and Pasadena have a rich heritage and association with the arts, and a strong cultural appreciation and support of artists, galleries and museums. Many artists have been attracted to live in this area. Because of the proliferation of so much talent here, it was natural for the idea of an Open Studios tour of our local artists and studios to take root. Not only has the idea taken root, it has blossomed from the original show in December of 2013 with five locations and nine artists, to a bi-annual event with the last show featuring 75 artists at 41 locations in Altadena/Pasadena.
The Open Studios Art Tour provides an intimate view into the artist’s life and studio; to be able to see where and how ideas are conceived and developed. When visiting an artist’s studio, the creative process becomes apparent and is unique to each artist. It provides a personal, individualized experience, unlike the setting of a typical gallery show. This is what makes our event so special.
Our Art Tour takes place over two days, from 11 am until 5 pm on Saturday and Sunday. It is a self guided tour, allowing visitors to visit with as many artists and locations as desired. Each location offers varying artists and art styles and all offer hospitality and a chance to support local art and make new friends.
Art and other one-of-a-kind, handmade items are available for purchase at most locations and at our retail hosts. Some locations offer food, and some offer music and other amenities. Open Studios started in 2013 as a small gathering with a few studios of artist friends in Altadena and Pasadena. The idea originated over a cup of coffee between two friends: Mary Gothard and Ginko Ching Lee at Sidewalk Cafe HTS. Mary and her husband, Patrick, had been hosting a lively open studio at their Altadena home for 10 years. Ginko wanted to support this event and a few more friends were invited to join. Thus the first Open Studios was born on Dec 2013. With the help of many volunteers, artists and art lovers, this program has since expanded into a two day experience twice a year.
